Estimate materials needed to build a garden shed including plywood, framing lumber, and roofing. A basic shed requires a foundation (concrete blocks, gravel pad, or concrete slab), floor framing and plywood, wall framing with studs at 16-inch centers, exterior sheathing, roofing, siding, a door, and optional windows. Use pressure-treated lumber for any wood touching the ground or within 6 inches of grade. A 4/12 roof pitch provides adequate water drainage while keeping the build simple. Consider future use when sizing—most people wish they had built bigger. Check local building codes for setback requirements, maximum size without permits, and any HOA restrictions.
