Predict a child's adult height using the mid-parental height method. This formula uses both parents' heights to estimate the child's genetic height potential. For boys, add 13cm (5 inches) to the mother's height and average with the father's. For girls, subtract 13cm from the father's height and average with the mother's. The prediction has a margin of error of about ±8.5cm, meaning most children will fall within this range. Genetics account for about 60-80% of height variation, with nutrition, sleep, exercise, and overall health influencing the remainder. Children who are well-nourished and healthy tend to reach the upper end of their genetic potential. Growth is most rapid in infancy and during puberty. A pediatric bone age X-ray can provide a more precise height prediction for individual children.
